Police today (5 October) arrested a youth within six hours of allegedly murdering his lover in Chattogram city under the suspicion that she was involved in a relationship with one of his friends.
The suspect, identified as Md Tarek, 20, a construction worker from Bhola, was apprehended around 3:00am from the Lichubagan area of Chandraghona in Rangunia upazila, said Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman.
The victim, Maryam Akhter Samira, 18, a garment factory worker from Patuakhali, had reportedly been in a relationship with Tarek.
OC Solaiman said Samira had cut off communication with Tarek six months prior, leading to tensions between them.
“On Friday around 8:00pm, Tarek called Samira and asked her to meet him. When the two met, an argument ensued over various issues, including Tarek’s suspicion that Samira was romantically involved with one of his friends. In a fit of rage, Tarek allegedly stabbed Samira in the throat, killing her on the spot, before fleeing to his maternal home in Rangunia,” he added.
Police quickly launched an investigation, using CCTV footage to identify and track Tarek.
During initial interrogation, Tarek confessed to the murder, the OC said.
“Tarek told us that he suspected Samira was in a relationship with one of his friends, which led her to break up with him. However, we haven’t found evidence to support this claim,” he added.
“The police recovered the knife used in the murder, which Tarek had purchased from a street vendor. A murder case was filed by Samira’s brother following the incident. Further investigation is underway,” the OC further added.
