Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment AHM Shafiquzzaman has called for leveraging the immense potential of the tannery sector to strengthen the national economy.
He said, “The tannery sector will revive, and it must revive. To achieve this, the government, owners, workers, and all stakeholders must work together.”
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a workshop held after inspecting the tannery industrial area at Hemayetpur in Savar today, according to a press release.
The labour secretary further said, “One of the key advantages of Bangladesh’s tannery and leather goods industry is the availability of raw materials produced domestically. Despite the production of millions of hides annually, their proper utilisation is hindered due to inadequate preservation and processing. By employing modern technology and improved management, value addition in leather can transform this sector into a leading contributor to the national economy.”
Fahmida Akhtar, the chief inspector of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, said, “Sustainable development in the tannery industry requires collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, including owners and workers. The government will take effective measures to ensure proper management and fair working conditions in this sector.”
M Abul Kalam Azad, president of the Tannery Workers Union, said, “To ensure the protection and development of the tannery sector, the Central Effluent Treatment Plant must be made operational promptly. Furthermore, quality product manufacturing and the recruitment of skilled workers can advance this sector further.”
The workshop was attended by representatives from labour and owner groups, development partners, officials from various government departments, and industry experts.
The welcome speech was delivered by Md Matiur Rahman, joint chief inspector of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments.
