Student’s body found hanging from ceiling in JU

Some students of Jahangirnagar University have recovered the hanging body of one of their classmates from a residential hall in the campus.

The body was found inside Room No-7005 on the seventh floor of Bir Pratik Taraman Bibi Hall around 5am today (15 December), said students.

The deceased has been identified as Takia Tasnim Biva, 19, a first year student of 2023-2024 session from the university’s Geography and Environment department and a residential student of the hall.

Biva was the daughter of businessman Arif Hossain from Paranduali area under Magura Sadar upazila.

According to her classmates, Biva had talked to her boyfriend for 1 hour 54 minutes in a video call before her death.

Biva had a quarrel with him during the call and tried to hang herself from the ceiling of her room. Then her boyfriend notified the matter to her classmates and asked them to save her. Finding the door of Biva’s room locked, her classmates informed the hall provost about the matter, who then came and broke the door open, students said.

Biva was found hanging upon entering the room. She was rushed to the university’s Medical Centre where the doctors on-duty declared her dead, her classmates added.

Terming Biva’s death as unnatural, Hall Provost Professor Abeda Sultana said some diaries and a mobile phone have been found inside the room and police are looking into them.

Contacted, Sub Inspector of Ashulia police station Md Masud said, “We have collected primary information about the deceased. An autopsy will be conducted with permissions from the hall provost and her family. The body will be handed over to the family of the deceased if permission for an autopsy is not granted.”
