Rescuers have recovered the bodies of three individuals missing since a speedboat capsized after colliding with a sand-carrying bulkhead on the Kirtankhola River in Barishal, taking the death toll in the incident to four.
The bodies were retrieved between 8am and 11am this morning (8 December) from three different points in the Beltala area along the river, said Sheikh Md Nazrul Islam, the leader of Barishal’s River Fire Station under the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The victims were identified as speedboat driver Al Amin, Imran from Bhola Sadar, and Rasel Sikder from Kalapara, Patuakhali.
One person, Sajal Das, remains missing, and the search operation will continue until he is found, said Nazrul.
The tragic accident occurred last Thursday (5 December) when the Barishal-bound speedboat, carrying at least 10 people, collided with the sand-laden vessel and sunk.
While five of them managed to swim ashore, the other five including the speedboat driver went missing.
The body of one of the missing five, identified as Jalis Mahmud, was recovered from the river several hours after the accident.
The driver of the bulkhead, Khalek Majhi, was arrested and sent to jail in a case that was filed by river police the same day.
