The Sound Pollution Control Rules will be finalised this month, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said today (13 December).
“The rules will give police the power to control sound pollution,” she said, adding, “It is not enough just to sentence jail or impose fines, but awareness must be created and responsible behaviour should be brought among the country’s people to this end”.
Rizwana made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an awareness programme on sound pollution control in front of Gulshan Society Jame Mosque.
She said noise pollution has adverse impacts on physical and mental health of people and that is why everyone’s cooperation is needed to check sound pollution.
Addressing car drivers, the environment adviser said: “Think, the horn of your car is damaged. Do not play horn. Reducing the speed of vehicles will also help cut the risk of accidents.”
Mentioning that special initiatives will be taken to control noise pollution in 10 areas of Dhaka, she said if everyone remains aware, building a livable city free of sound pollution will be possible.
RAJUK Chairman Major General (retd) Md Siddiqur Rahman Sarker, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md Mahmudul Hasan, Sound Pollution Control Project Director Syeda Masuma Khanam, Gulshan Society President Omar Sadat, its Vice President Syed Almas Kabir and Secretary General Syed Ahsan Habib among others, were present.
Later, Adviser Rizwana visited Gulshan Lake and suggested setting up a sewage treatment plant there.
