Section 144 imposed in Rangamati, Khagrachhari

The local administration has imposed Section 144 in the Pauroshabhas of Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts due to the deteriorating law and order situation and the risk of property damage.

A order, signed by Rangamati District Magistrate Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan, has been effective from 1pm today (20 September) until further notice.

If anyone attempts to violate the imposed restrictions, legal action will be taken against them, the notice warned.

The actions comes in the backdrop of repeated clashes between Bangalis and the indigenous people in Khagrachari.

On Wednesday, a man named Md Mamun was beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Khagrachhari. Following the death, Bangali students brought out a protest rally yesterday. Many provocative speeches were given, according to eye-witnesses.

At one point, heated arguments broke out between the Bangalis and the indigenous people.

Clashes ensued and at one point, miscreants set fire to about 50 shops in Larma Square. Five people were injured in the incident.

Later at night, there were shootings in Narankhaiya area of Khagrachhari sadar where three people were killed and nine people were injured.
