Right to Information (RTI) Forum has urged the interim government to take immediate action to fill the vacant posts at the Bangladesh Information Commission, which has been non-functional for nearly three months due to the resignation of its three commissioners in September.
In a statement, citing Section 14(1) of the Right to Information Act, 2009, the Forum called for the urgent formation of a five-member selection committee to appoint the Chief Information Commissioner and other Information Commissioners.
The Forum emphasized that prolonged vacancies in these key positions threaten the effective implementation of the Right to Information Act, hindering the free flow of information and discouraging public engagement with the law.
“The Right to Information Act is vital for ensuring transparency, combating corruption, and holding public officials accountable,” reads the statement.
The statement also added, “Without commissioners in place, citizens are left with no avenue to seek redress when officials fail to provide information or neglect their duties.”
