Police have arrested Saiful Islam Sajib, a local Jubo League leader, 16 days after he escaped from police custody at Lohagara Police Station in Chattogram.
“Acting on a tip-off, Saiful was apprehended from the Baharchhara area of the district’s Banshkhali Upazila around 5:30am today [25 September],” Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of district special branch Abu Tayub Mohammad Arif Hosen told The Business Standard.
“Police have taken the necessary steps to ensure Saiful is held accountable for his prior crimes as well as his escape from custody. Legal action will be taken against him,” the ASP added.
The officer further said Saiful was arrested on 9 September, when locals captured him at a residence in Bahadur Para, near Bangla Bazar.
“Later, locals handed him over to the police, but Saiful managed to escape shortly after being taken into custody.”
Following his escape, four police officers, including Officer-in-Charge Rashedul Islam, Sub-Inspectors Nachima Akhtar and Amir Hussain, and Constable M Enamul Haque, were withdrawn from their posts for negligence, the ASP said.
According to locals, Saiful, son of Nazir Ahmed of Kalauzhan Union’s Ward No 7, had a history of harassing people in the area during the Awami League government’s tenure. After the government’s fall, Saiful went into hiding.
