Over 1,300 hectares of crops damaged following surge in water level of three Chapainawabganj rivers

The low-lying areas and chars alongside three rivers, including Padma, in Chapainawabganj had been submerged after the water ranges in these surged , causing hurt to plant life.

Locals told that some 4,585 farmers have suffered losses as plant life on 1,354 hectares of land alongside the rivers had been broken.

Residents said the water ranges in the Padma, Mahananda and Punarbhaba rivers began swelling over the final 10 days, allowing water to enter the croplands and homesteads.

Dr Palash Sarkar, deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in the district, confirmed the water surge asserting that plant life on 1,354 hectares of lands had been broken in Sadar, Shibganj and Gomastapur upazilas.

Some 4,585 growers of Aush, pulses and onion are the victims of the inundation, he said.

District’s Water Building Board Govt Engineer Ahsan Habib told that the water ranges in the rivers elevated due to an onrush of water from upstream India as the country skilled heavy rainfall for the previous few days.

He, nonetheless, said that the water had been flowing beneath the anguish stage and hoped the water would slash one day of the following few days.

In conserving with the Water Building Board, the water ranges in the Padma, Mahananda and Punarbhaba elevated by 5cm, 6cm and 10cm respectively over 24 hours till 6am on Wednesday.
