Over 100 injured in clashes over charging mobile phone in Sylhet

A seemingly minor dispute over mobile phone charging in Sylhet’s Companiganj escalated into violent clashes between two groups, leaving more than 100 people injured.

The clashes, which ensued last night and continued through today (15 December), involved residents from multiple villages.

Citing locals, Companiganj Police Station OC Uzayer Al Mahmud Adnan said the initial altercation occurred between two individuals over charging mobile phone at a local shop on Saturday night.

The dispute quickly escalated, leading to a series of confrontations involving hundreds of people armed with locally made weapons, said the OC.

He added that the clashes spread to several areas where vehicles and shops were vandalised.

Later, police and army personnel intervened to calm the situation.

However, the officer said the situation worsened on Sunday morning. Large groups from both sides engaged in further clashes.

Kamruzzaman Rasel, health and family planning officer at Companiganj Upazila Health Complex said over 50 people received medical treatment following the clashes.

Two of the injured were shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital as their condition stated to be critical, he added.

A tense situation is prevailing in the area following the incident.
