Students have vandalised the main gate of the Dhaka National Medical College and Hospital (DNMCH) in the capital’s Old Dhaka after 18-year-old student Abhijit Halder from Dr Mahbubur Rahman Molla College died while undergoing treatment there.
The students alleged medical malpractice and irregularities behind Abhijit’s death.
Students armed with sticks gathered in front of the hospital in the capital’s Old Dhaka around 1pm today (24 November), according to media reports.
Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, and army personnel were seen attempting to calm the protesting students inside the gate.
“A student named Abhijit Halder was brought to the emergency department of the hospital on 16 November morning. After examinations, he was diagnosed with dengue fever and subsequently admitted to the medicine department, where he received the necessary treatment,” Deputy Director (Administration) of Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital Dr Rezaul Haque told media.
“During treatment, his condition worsened, and he was transferred to the intensive care unit [ICU] after obtaining permission from his guardian and consulting with specialists. Despite all medical efforts and specialist intervention, Abhijit died on 18 November,” he added.
Rezaul said the hospital authorities completed the necessary procedures for the handover of the body to Abhijit’s relatives and suspended the whole billing following his death.
