Murder accused, awaiting trial in N'ganj jail, dies before bail order could reach him

A man accused in a murder case, who was awaiting trial in the Narayanganj district jail, died today (16 December) after falling sick.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Awal, 62.

Md Mamunur Rashid, jailor of Narayanganj District Jail, said Awal died at around 3am while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

“When Abdul Awal fell ill at night, he was first taken to Narayanganj General Hospital. When doctors referred him to Dhaka, he was taken to DMCH. He died there while undergoing treatment.”

Zaman, son of the deceased, told reporters that two cases were filed against his father in connection with the recent student movement. Police then arrested him on 2 September.

“Last Sunday, the High Court granted him bail in the two cases. He fell ill and died before he could be released on bail,” Zaman said.
