Lynching of ex-BCL leader: 8 JU students suspended, probe committee formed

The Jahangirnagar University administration has suspended eight students after finding preliminary evidence of their direct involvement in the gruesome lynching of former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Shamim Mollah.

The university has also formed a five-member probe committee to investigate the incident.

The university issued two separate notices, signed by its Registrar ABM Kamruzzaman, on Thursday (19 September) confirming the developments.

Another seven-member committee has been formed to investigate attacks on JU teachers and students staying on campus on the night of 15 July.  

In the office order regarding the suspension of students, JU authorities wrote that the students had been punished after preliminary evidence gathered by the proctorial body confirmed the students’ direct involvement in the death of Shamim Mollan, a former student (2009-10 academic year) of the Department of History of JU.

The suspensions will come into effect immediately.

The suspended students are: Mohammad Rajan Mia, 46th batch, and Raju Ahmed, 45th batch, from the Department of Government and Politics; Md Mahmudul Hasan Raihan, 50th batch, Department of English; Zubair Ahmed, 44th batch, Department of History; Hamidullah Salman, 49th batch, Department of English; Md Atikuzzaman Atiq, 49th batch, Department of Management Studies; Sohag Mia, 47th batch, Department of Computer Science and Engineering; and Md Ahsan Labib, 49th batch, Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. 

Probe committees

The five-member committee formed to investigate Shamim’s killing will be headed by Archaeology Professor Swadhin Sen, according to a notice.

Other members of the committee are: Philosophy Professor Muhammad Tareq Chowdhury, History Professor Md Emran Jahan, History Professor Anichha Parvin and Journalism and Media Professor Amina Islam. 

Besides, Deputy Registrar (higher education and scholarship) Md Lutfor Rahman Arif has been made member secretary of the committee.

The committee has been asked to submit its probe report within 30 working days. 

According to a separate order issued by the JU authorities, the seven-member committee to probe attacks on students and teachers in front of the Vice Chancellor’s Residence and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Hall on 15 July night will be headed by Bangla Professor Anirudha Kahaly.

The committee will also investigate attacks and firing of pellets on students on 17 July on the campus during the student movement. 

Other members of the committee are: Government and Politics Professor Shamsul Alam, Pharmaceutical Professor Mafruhi Sattar, Biology Professor Saleh Ahammad Khan, Chemistry Professor Ataur Rahman, Physics Professor Shafiqul Islam, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Professor Borhan Uddin.

Besides, Deputy Registrar (general administration and law) Mahtab-Uz-Zahid has ben made member secretary of the probe body.

The committee has been asked to submit its report with recommendations within 30 working days
