Los Angeles County is rolling out a new hydrogen-powered commuter train, ZEMU (zero-emissions multiple units), to help tackle local and global air pollution. Manufactured by Swiss company Stadler, ZEMU trains run on hydrogen fuel cells, producing only water vapor as a byproduct. Unlike traditional electric trains, which rely on costly overhead powerlines, ZEMU can operate on existing rail infrastructure, making it a more practical and affordable decarbonization solution for long distances.
The train is currently in the final testing phase and is expected to begin service between San Bernardino and LA in early 2025. Though the hydrogen used is currently fossil-fuel-based, future trains will run on green hydrogen made from renewable sources. With San Bernardino recently receiving an ‘F’ grade for air quality, this low-emission transport option is arriving just in time.
Hydrogen-powered trains offer a promising solution for cities looking to reduce emissions without massive infrastructure investments.
