Former Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp made a nostalgic return to the club’s dugout on Saturday, nine years after his last match as coach. The occasion was a testimonial match honoring team stalwarts Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukas Piszczek.
Klopp, who coached Blaszczykowski’s side to a 5-4 victory in front of a sold-out Westfalenstadion, described the experience as “like a school reunion.” The match featured several club legends and current manager Nuri Sahin.
The German tactician spent seven successful years at Dortmund, leading the club to two Bundesliga titles, one German Cup, and the 2013 Champions League final. Klopp stepped down as Liverpool manager last season and has not returned to coaching since.
Despite the playful banter about the aging players, Klopp expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with the club and its fans. The match also marked a farewell for defender Mats Hummels, who joined Roma in the summer after a long and successful career at Dortmund.
