Police have rescued a Rohingya teenager who was kidnapped for ransom in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar three days ago.
Two suspects have been arrested from the Dakshin Lombri area of Teknaf in connection with the incident, said Muhammad Gias Uddin, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.
The arrested individuals are Parvez Mosharraf (19) and Nurul Afsar (19).
The rescued teenager, Mohammad Hamim (15), is the son of Nurul Amin from Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila.
Citing the case statement, OC Gias Uddin said, “Hamim went missing after leaving home for Jummah prayers on 4 October. The following day, his mother received a call demanding Tk70,000 in ransom for his release. The kidnappers threatened to kill him if the ransom was not paid.”
Teknaf police launched an investigation after Hamim’s mother filed a case against eight people, with Mohammad Salim as the prime accused.
“Through technological means, police were able to identify the location of the kidnappers. A team of officers conducted a raid on a suspected residence in Dakshin Lombri and arrested two individuals involved in the kidnapping. Meanwhile, 4-5 people managed to flee the scene,” said the OC.
The police operation is ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, he added.
