The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a Jubo League activist in connection with killing of Chittagong University (CU) student Hriday Tarua, 21, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Bahadarhat area in Chattogram on 18 July.
On a tip-off, the Jubo League activist HM Mithu, 41, was apprehended yesterday (6 October) around 10:40pm following a raid in the Chandgaon area of the port city, Shariful Alam, senior assistant director (media) of RAB-7 confirmed through a press statement today (7 October).
“Upon interrogation, Mithu confessed to his involvement in the attack. Later, he was handed over to Chandgaon Police Station for further legal actions,” he added.
According to the statement, on 18 July, Hriday took part in the protest at Bahaddarhat area. The gathering turned deadly when Mithu and several accomplices unleashed a brutal assault on the crowd, armed with illegal firearms, hockey sticks, and sharp weapons.
Mithu and his gang fired indiscriminately at the protesters. Hriday, who attempted to flee the chaos, was shot and brutally beaten with iron rods and sticks, leaving him gravely injured.
He was immediately rushed to Park View Hospital in Chattogram but was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Hriday succumbed to his injuries on 23 July.
Following Hriday’s death, his friend Md Azizul Haque filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station, naming 206 and accusing 400-500 unknown individuals.
The charges include murder, assault, and unlawful use of explosives under various sections of the Penal Code and the Explosive Substances Act, the statement reads.
