JU to ensure punishment of those responsible for Shamim Molla’s death

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authority has expressed deep shock and sorrow over its former student Shamim Molla being beaten to death on campus yesterday.

The university pledged to expose those involved in the attack on him to justice after a thorough investigation.

“The university authority considers any kind of extra-judicial killing as unwarranted and a punishable offence. The authority has condemned the attack on Shamim Molla. At the same time, it expresses firm determination to ensure exemplary punishment to those responsible for the attack at the quickest possible time after an appropriate investigation into the matter,” said a press release of the JU public relations office signed by its Director (in-charge) Dr Mohammad Mohiduddin today.

Shamim Mollah, a 39th batch and 2009-2010 session student of the Department of History of the university, fell victim to a mob beating at Prantik Gate of the university campus, the release said.

He later died while undergoing treatment at the local Gonoshasthaya Hospital.

The university authority has expressed deep shock and sorrow at his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members, the release said.

In a statement, JU authorities said some people started beating Shamim Molla at the Prantik Gate of the university around 5:50pm yesterday.

After being informed, the proctorial team of the university, led by Proctor Prof Dr AKM Rashidul Alam, rescued him in an injured condition and kept him in a room of the proctor office for ensuring his security.

At that time, the Ashulia Police Station was informed of the matter.

A few moments later, some people forcibly took Shamim Mollah to a security office besides the proctor office without informing the proctorial team.

Upon being informed about the incident, Proctor Prof Dr AKM Rashidul Alam rushed to the security office and locked the collapsible gate of that office.

Some people attacked him again after entering the security office, breaking open the collapsible gate. At that time, the proctorial team and officers of the security unit stood in front of Shamim Molla as shields and prevented them from attacking him.

Police later came to know through a search that there are numerous cases against Shamim Molla.

Again around 8pm, the proctorial and security officers stood as shields in front of Shamim Molla and escorted him to a police vehicle.

A police official later, around 10pm, informed that Shamim Molla died at the Gonoshasthaya Hospital while undergoing treatment.
