Fugitive accused in student murder case arrested in Noakhali

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members have arrested a fugitive accused involved in killing a student during anti-discrimination student movement from Sonapur Zero Point area in Sudharampur thana in Noakhali district.

The arrestee is Zobayer Hossain alias Hridoy, 23.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from RAB-7 and RAB-11 conducted an operation around 5:30pm yesterday (20 September), leading to his arrest.

During interrogation, Zobayer confessed to his involvement in the student killing and revealed that he was hiding in various locations across Noakhali to evade arrest since the case was filed.

According to the case statement, Zobayer and some other accused in the case opened fire indiscriminately on protesting students and people during the July-August movement, during which a 20-year-old student from Baraiyarhat College named Saiful Islam was shot.

They shot him 14 to 16 more times at close range. After severely injuring him, they used sticks, iron rods, and the butts of rifles to beat him, ensuring his death.

Saiful was declared dead at Feni General Hosptial.

Following the murder, Saiful’s father filed a case at the Feni Model Police Station, naming 94 individuals and an additional 100 to 150 unknown people on August 14.

Sharif-ul-Alam, senior assistant director (Media) of Rab-7, confirmed the matter.

Zobayer was handed over to the Feni Model Police Station for further legal action, he said.
