Mirpur police under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested six individuals in connection with extortion and fraud, recovering over Tk57 lakh in cash from their possession.
The arrestees have been identified as Mohammad Mohsin Munshi, Mohammad Mazharul Islam, Mohammad Rezaul Karim, Tayyab, Mohammad Humayun Kabir, and Noor Mohammad.
During a press briefing today (9 October) at the DMP Media Center, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebor Rahman provided details revolving around Mohammad Harunur Rashid Bhuiyan, a resident of Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
According to the DMP official, Bhuiyan had entered into an agreement with Nafco real estate developers to purchase three floors of a building under construction in Dhanmondi. Bhuiyan made an initial deposit, followed by additional payments.
Nafco’s Managing Director (MD) and Deputy Managing Director (DMD) allegedly instructed Bhuiyan to bring the remaining payment to their office in Mirpur for property registration, requesting the payment in cash.
On October 8 evening, Bhuiyan, accompanied by his family, brought Tk 72.8 lakh in two bags to the agreed upon location in Mirpur. He was led to the 6th-floor office with Tk 32.8 lakh, while his wife remained in the car with Tk 40 lakh.
Suddenly, a group of 20-25 masked individuals, allegedly armed, assaulted Bhuiyan and forcibly took Tk 32.8 lakh from him.
The attackers proceeded to the parking lot, where they assaulted Bhuiyan’s wife, children, and driver, seizing the remaining Tk 40 lakh, a gold chain, and mobile phones. The victims were locked in another room before the attackers fled the scene.
The family was eventually rescued after a passerby heard their cries for help and unlocked the door. Mirpur police were notified and promptly began an investigation.
Following raids at multiple locations across Dhaka, police arrested the six suspects and recovered Tk 57.5 lakh in cash, along with other evidence.
A case has been filed at the Mirpur Model Police Station regarding the incident, and further investigation is underway.
