Ex-Ctg board official held accountable for son’s HSC fraud

Prof Narayan Chandra Nath, the former secretary of the Chattogram education board and current director of Secondary and Higher Education in Chittagong, is set to face legal consequences after a Ministry investigation found him guilty of manipulating his son’s HSC exam results. The Ministry of Education has ordered criminal proceedings against him and those involved in the fraudulent activity.

The directive was issued in a letter signed by Shatarupa Talukder, senior assistant secretary of the Ministry’s Disciplinary Affairs Branch, on 15 September. The letter, addressed to the Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (MAUSI), outlined the need for disciplinary action against Narayan Chandra Nath under the Government Servants (Disciplinary and Appeal) Rules, 2018.

While the letter was sent earlier, the case came to public attention on Thursday.

According to the Ministry’s findings, Nath was instrumental in ensuring his son received a GPA-5 in the 2023 HSC examination through fraudulent means. Following a thorough investigation by MAUSI, which submitted its report on 4 August, the Ministry concluded that the allegations were true and ordered the immediate cancellation of his son’s results.

The Ministry has also directed the Chittagong Education Board Chairman to file criminal charges against all individuals connected to the scam.

Nath’s son’s fraudulent results came under scrutiny following a cabinet department directive, which led to an official investigation by MAUSI. The fraud involved the deliberate manipulation of the HSC results under Nath’s influence as a high-ranking education official.

The directive of criminal proceedings marks a significant step toward accountability in the country’s education system. Narayan Chandra Nath, is expected to face both departmental and legal actions following the Ministry’s orders.
