An effective project will be taken to resolve the problem of waterlogging in Jashore’s Bhabadaha area permanently, said Water Resources Ministry Secretary Nazmul Ahsan on Thursday.
The secretary said that the problem of the Bhabadaha area is a long-standing issue, but no government has taken any effective steps to mitigate the waterlogging problem.
The secretary said these while visiting the area with a technical team in the morning.
He visited the Bhabadaha area on the instruction of Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan.
He also attended a views exchange meeting with the residents of the Bhabadaha area at the deputy commissioner’s office in Jashore.
In the meeting, the residents described their suffering and misery due to the waterlogging in the Bhabadaha area.
They said that previous governments took various initiatives, but that had not been fruitful.
They urged the present interim government to solve the problem of Bhabadaha permanently, as the recent past government siphoned off money in the name of the project.
Water Development Board Director General Muhammad Amirul Haque Bhuiyan and Jashore Deputy Commissioner Azaharul Islam were present at the views exchange meeting.
More than four lakh people in Abhaynagar, Monirampur and Keshabpur upazilas of Jashore and parts of Dumuria and Phultala upazilas of Khulna have been suffering from permanent waterlogging for over 40 years.
On Sunday, the people of the Bhabadah area staged a sit-in programme in front of the deputy commissioner’s office, demanding a permanent solution. Then, adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan spoke to them on the telephone and assured them of taking steps to resolve the waterlogging permanently.
