The government has formed a one-member committee to probe the authenticity of a Tk3 crore cheque recovered from the office of Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, whose name has come up in a media report as being associated with irregularities in appointing deputy commissioners.
The committee, headed by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Rezaul Maqsud Zahedi, has been tasked with submitting a report to the ministry’s senior secretary within the next three days after verifying the authenticity of the cheque.
Following a report, published in the Bangla daily Kalbela, titled “DC appointment with Tk3 crore in cash cheque” on Tuesday (24 September), the ministry issued a notification regarding the formation of the committee.
The Kalbela report, citing the secretariat and intelligence sources, said the scandal over the appointment of DC for the interim government was not over.
Following recovery of the cheque from Ahmed’s office, it was found to have been issued by a businessman to the joint secretary on behalf of a deputy commissioner.
However, the cheque was not encashed.
Kalbela said in its report, there were allegations of widespread corruption in this year’s DC appointment, and two joint secretaries of the Ministry of Public Administration were allegedly involved.
