Workers in Chattogram formed a human chain on 21 November, demanding protection of workers’ rights, including proper documentation, welfare support, and fair wages.
The event was organised by the Chattogram Rural Youth Trade Union Network at the Cheragi Pahar intersection.
They called for the issuance of appointment letters, identity cards, and service books for all workers. They also sought regular financial assistance from the Worker Welfare Foundation Fund for underprivileged workers, government-led daycare facilities in labour-intensive areas, and the implementation of a dignified minimum wage to ensure a sustainable livelihood.
Additional demands included a government-maintained database for construction workers, at least 5% of factory workforces comprising apprentices, and the establishment of fair-price shops and a rationing system for workers.
The protest was presided over by youth trade union leader Gulzar Begum and moderated by BILS officer Fazlul Kabir Mintoo. Labour leaders and activists, including Tapan Dutta, member of the newly formed Labour Rights Commission, and AM Nazim Uddin, president of the BNP-affiliated Labour Party’s Chattogram Divisional Committee, addressed the gathering.
Other speakers included labour leaders M Jamal Uddin, Mohammad Alo, Advocate Iqbal Hossain, and construction worker leaders Mohin Uddin and Hasibur Rahman Biplob.
They emphasised the critical role of workers in national progress, urging the government to prioritise their welfare.
Expressing optimism about the newly formed Labour Rights Commission, they urged it to address workers’ grievances and propose actionable solutions.
