CNG drivers block Rajshahi-Naogaon highway over clash with bus workers

CNG drivers have blocked the Nowhata Bridge area of the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway since this noon (18 December), protesting an alleged attack by bus workers.

The blockade has disrupted bus services on the Rajshahi-Naogaon route, with buses from Naogaon returning after reaching Mohanpur as they fail to continue to Rajshahi.

However, the movement of other vehicles on the highway remains normal.

The CNG drivers claimed that bus workers attacked them at the CNG stand near Rajshahi Railgate last morning (17 December), vandalising 20 to 30 CNGs and injuring several drivers.

“This attack was sparked by an earlier incident involving CNG drivers from Rajshahi’s Tanore, but taking revenge on us is unacceptable,” said one of the protesting drivers.

“We demand justice within the next 24 hours, or we will launch an indefinite movement,” he added.

Nazrul Islam Helal, acting general secretary of the Rajshahi Bus Owners’ Association, said, “They vandalised two buses in Nowhata and assaulted bus drivers and helpers. Out of fear, we have stopped bus services on the route, and buses from Naogaon are only going as far as Mohanpur.”
