Child labourer loses wrist as crude bomb explodes in Munshiganj garbage dump

Sajib, a 12-year-old child labourer, lost his wrist and sustained critical injuries in an explosion at a garbage dump in Munshiganj’s Dakkhin Islampur. 

The child, a resident of Narayanganj Sadar’s Paikpara area, was scavenging for bottles when the explosion happened this afternoon (8 December).

According to police, the explosion occurred around 12:30pm while Sajib was collecting recyclable items with his father, Raju Sheikh, and his brother.

The blast was reportedly triggered by an object resembling a cocktail bomb, added the police. 

Sajib was rushed to Munshiganj General Hospital, where emergency department doctors administered initial treatment before referring him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced care.

Dr Ruhul Amin of Munshiganj General Hospital said, “The explosion caused severe damage to the boy’s lower abdomen, legs, and both arms.”

Munshiganj Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Sajib De said the incident will be thoroughly investigated.
