Businessmen regain control of Jashore chamber after a decade

After a long hiatus of 12 years, the responsibility of the Jashore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) has been returned to the business community.

The handover took place yesterday night (30 November) at an introduction and responsibility transfer ceremony held at the Jashore Club auditorium.

At the event, the newly-elected board members of the chamber were introduced.

Speaking at the event, newly-elected General Secretary of JCCI, Tanvirul Islam Sohan, said, “Jashore is a promising business city. But due to the inactivity of the chamber for so long, investors have not been attracted to invest in this city.

“Now, with the patronage of the chamber, businessmen will be provided with necessary training, advice, and guidance to promote business,” he added.

Addressing the newly elected board members, businessman Chinmoy Saha said, “After a decade, the chamber has come into the hands of businessmen. The current board members should hand over the responsibility by conducting an effective election after two years.”

According to chamber sources, due to political influence and court cases during the previous government, the JCCI election did not been held for the past decade.

For 10 years, an administrator had been appointed to run this top organisation.

The last election of the chamber was held on 16 April 2011.

On 28 November, a notification was issued by the convener of the election management committee and Senior Assistant Commissioner Anwar Hossain, mentioning the positions of the 19-member committee.

On 30 November, the JCCI election commission announced the schedule for the election.

The last date for submitting nomination papers was 26 October. As no other panel submitted nomination papers on that day, the panel led by Mizanur Rahman won unopposed.
