The Bangladesh Maritime Law Society (BMLS) hosted an insightful seminar on the theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First!” in celebration of World Maritime Day 2024 at the CIRDAP International Conference Center, Dhaka on Thursday (26 September).
This year’s event focused on maritime safety in the face of new global challenges, emphasising the importance of legislative support and sustainable maritime industry practices, reads a press release.
The BMLS President Advocate Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir underscored maritime safety and future developments under his keynote presentations.
Other keynote speakers discussed on “50 Years of the SOLAS Convention: Implementation in Bangladesh”, “Bangladesh’s Role as A Flag State and Port State in Contributing to Maritime Safety”, “Prospects and Challenges of Green Shipping in Bangladesh”.
The seminar was largely attended by maritime lawyers, academicians, shipbuilders, insurers, industry leaders and above all students from the faculty of law of ten leading Universities of Dhaka.
Additionally, the programme emphasised on “One Bangladesh” and the unity of the people of Bangladesh in this difficult time and was largely welcomed.
The seminar was graced by notable dignitaries on dais, including the Chief Guest Justice AFM Abdur Rahman (retd), and the Esteemed Special Guest Prof Dr Borhan Uddin Khan from the University of Dhaka, alongside renowned speakers from Bangladesh’s maritime community including the President of Bangladesh Maritime Law Society (BMLS) Advocate Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir, Head of Chambers at MCLaw Services Ltd, Advocate Shweata Mishra, Former DG, Department of Shipping Bangladesh, Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, Engineer, Ship Surveyor and Examiner, Department of Shipping, Bangladesh, Mohammad Obaidullah Ibne Bashir and Professor, Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dr Mir Tareque Ali.
The seminar reinforced the growing importance of maritime safety in national and international waters. BMLS remains committed to fostering dialogue and legal reforms to safeguard the future of Bangladesh’s maritime sector.
