Several Awami League leaders from former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime have been arrested and are facing lawsuits, including Shahidul Islam Milon, who was elected from the Jashore Sadar constituency.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Milon in the Gulistan area on Thursday.
Talibur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Media) of the DMP, confirmed that a Detective Branch team detained him in Gulistan on Thursday afternoon, reports UNB.
Milon, a freedom fighter and president of the Jashore district unit of the Awami League, was taken to Gulshan police station following his arrest.
He is accused in several cases related to attacks on students and the public during recent unrest, according to the police official.
Meanwhile, police have arrested Samir Chandra, president of the Bangladesh Krishak League central committee, and Saiful Islam Milon, president of the Jashore district Awami League, in the capital, early yesterday and on Thursday night, respectively.
“Police apprehended Samir Chandra from Badda at 12:10am yesterday and Milon from the Fulbaria area near Gulistan at 10pm on Thursday,” Talibur Rahman told BSS.
Both individuals are wanted in connection with several criminal cases related to killings and attacks during the student protests in July and August.
Jubo League leader arrested in Cumilla
Joint forces have arrested Jubo League leader Motabber Hossain Jony, the nephew of former Burichang upazila chairman Akhlak Haider, over alleged illegal possession of weapons in Cumilla.
He was detained on Thursday night in Sunduriapara, located in Moynamati union of Burichang upazila.
Burichang Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azizul Haque confirmed the arrest, stating, “There is a case filed against him. We will file a new case under the Arms Act and send him to court.”
“Based on secret information, joint forces led by the army launched an operation in Sunduriapara early yesterday, targeting individuals involved in criminal activities, and arrested Jony. The operation will continue until all illegal weapons are seized and criminals apprehended,” Azizul added.
Law enforcement officials recovered one foreign airgun, 14 local swords, a metal disc, three knives, five sticks, and cash worth Tk4.5 lakh from Jony’s possession.
He was subsequently handed over to Burichang police station along with the seized items.
Jony is alleged to have been involved in firing on protesters during the student movement.
He reportedly controlled the transport sector along the Cumilla-Brahmanbaria regional road for a long time, operating his bus company Farzana Transport.
