6 arrested over youth's murder in Gazipur

Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder of a youth who was chased and hacked to death near a police outpost in Gazipur’s Kaliakair in the early hours of Thursday (12 December).

“Police arrested them from various locations in Gazipur last night (16 December). They confessed to their involvement in the crime during primary interrogation,” Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Rabbiul Islam said at a press conference today (17 December).

“Stolen goods and the knife used in the murder also recovered from the arrestees,” he added.

The arrestees are Md Sarwar Hossain (Sharu), 28, a driver from Mymensingh; Nazim Uddin (Noyon), 35, and Md Saiful Islam, 42, CNG drivers from Kurigram; Mohammad Jewel, 24, a bus helper from Lakshmipur; Mohammad Milon, 27, a transport staff from Joypurhat; and Md Anwar Hossain, 35, a tea shop owner from Bhola who is involved in trading stolen mobile phones.

The ASP further stated the arrested individuals are part of a robbery gang. They would roam around in CNGs, targeting individuals in areas like Chandra, Mouchak, Konabari, Joydebpur intersection, Tongi, Salna, and Sreepur.

The deceased has been identified as Tajbir Hossain Shihan, 26, son of Tanvir Hossain Nannu of Mouchak Jamtala area of Kaliakair. He was a student of East West University and also an employee at a call centre in Uttara.

“The incident occurred around 5am on 12 December in front of Hanif Spining Mill near the Mouchak Police Outpost on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Kaliakair,” the ASP said.

“Shihan was heading from his home towards the Mouchak bus stand when five young men armed with sharp weapons began chasing him near Mazar Road. The attackers then hacked him to death in front of the Hanif Spinning Mill.”

Shihan’s father filed a case against unknown individuals over the killing of his son.
