530 sacks of polythene seized in Cox’s Bazar, factory owner fined Tk2 lakh

A mobile court in Cox’s Bazar seized 530 sacks of polythene today (25 September) from an “illegal factory” and fined the owner Tk2 lakh, according to a statement from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Md Abul Kalam Chowdhury, senior assistant director (Law and Media) and additional superintendent of RAB-15 Cox’s Bazar Battalion, said the raid was conducted on Tuesday night (24 September) in the Majhirghat area of Tekpara, Cox’s Bazar.

“During the search, 530 sacks of polythene were found. The individuals involved in the factory were unable to present any valid documentation or environmental clearance from the Department of Environment supporting their production of polythene,” he said.

They imposed a fine on Md Kamrul Hasan, the owner of HJ Enterprise, located in the Boro Bazar area of Cox’s Bazar.

The RAB official added, “We were tipped off that several illegal polythene factories, operating under various names had been established in different parts of Cox’s Bazar in violation of environmental laws.”

The mobile court fined the owner of HJ Enterprise Tk2 lakh under section 6-K of the Environment Conservation Act 1995 (amended in 2010) for producing and selling environmentally harmful materials, said the RAB official.
